Their story
Serving as an aidman with the 259th Infantry, 65th Infantry Division during the dawn assault on the Siegfried Line at Saarlautern, Germany, Private First Class Murphy was wounded in the shoulder but refused treatment and continued advancing through a minefield to administer first aid to fallen comrades under intense machine-gun, mortar, and artillery fire. While treating the wounded he was struck a second time and later killed by a mine explosion on March 19, 1945, having saved many lives through his selfless devotion.
