Their story
When his platoon was almost surrounded by the enemy near Saint-Souplet, France, and his platoon commander asked for volunteers to carry a message calling for reinforcements, Private Blackwell volunteered despite knowing the extreme danger. He was killed on October 11, 1918, while attempting to get through heavy shell and machine-gun fire to deliver the message.
