Their story
Captain Charles Satterlee was the commanding officer of the Coast Guard cutter USCGC Tampa when it was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UB-91 in the Bristol Channel on 26 September 1918 while escorting a convoy, killing all 131 aboard in the largest single U.S. naval combat loss of life of World War I. His body was never recovered, and he is memorialized on the Wall of the Missing at Brookwood American Cemetery in England. A cenotaph bearing his name stands at Gales Ferry Cemetery, Connecticut, but no remains are interred there.
