Their story
During the September 28, 1918 assault on Hill 188 in the Champagne Marne Sector, France, Corporal Stowers took charge of his squad after the company's leaders were killed or wounded by German machine-gun fire, leading an attack that destroyed an enemy machine-gun position. Though gravely wounded, he continued to crawl forward and urge his men onward against a second trench line until he died of his wounds. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 1991, becoming the first African American so honored for service in World War I.
