Their story
On the night of 17 July 1943 near Agrigento, Sicily, First Lieutenant Waybur led a reconnaissance patrol that was ambushed by four enemy tanks; though seriously wounded, he stood in the moonlight directly in the line of fire and used a Thompson submachine gun to disable the lead tank and kill its crew, then held his position with his men until reinforcements arrived. He survived the action and received the Medal of Honor on 21 October 1943, but was later killed in action in Germany on 28 March 1945.
