Their story
Corporal Homer J. Wheaton of the 101st Infantry, 26th Division, was credited as one of the first recipients of the Distinguished Service Cross in World War I. On 27 February 1918 near the Chemin des Dames sector in France, while hand grenades were being distributed during a bombardment, a live grenade was accidentally dropped; Wheaton rushed to pick it up to throw it clear and was fatally wounded when it exploded. He was also posthumously awarded the French Croix de Guerre.
