Their story
Inez Ann Murphy Crittenden was Chief Operator of the Second American Unit of Signal Corps Female Telephone Operators (the "Hello Girls"), leading hundreds of bilingual women who ran telephone exchanges supporting the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I. She died in Paris of pneumonia as a complication of influenza on Armistice Day, November 11, 1918, at age 31. She is buried at Suresnes American Cemetery; in 2021 her headstone was changed from "Civilian" to "Chief Operator Signal Corps," making her the only WWI woman with a military designation on her headstone there.
