Their story
Dorothy Katharine Cromwell was an American Red Cross volunteer who, with her twin sister Gladys, served canteen and hospital duty near the front at Chalons-sur-Marne and Verdun during World War I. Overcome by the trauma of her wartime service, she and her sister jumped to their deaths from the ship La Lorraine as it departed to bring them home on January 19, 1919. Both sisters were buried with military honors at Suresnes American Cemetery and posthumously awarded the French Croix de Guerre.
