Their story
First Lieutenant Samuel Soyster Crouse was a platoon leader in Company C, 110th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, composed largely of men from Somerset County, Pennsylvania. On June 17, 1918, his company was overrun by German forces at Courthiezy after neighboring French troops withdrew without warning, exposing the Americans' flanks; Crouse, age 54, was killed in the attack while his son, serving in the same company, was taken prisoner. He is buried at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in France and is noted as the oldest serviceman interred there.
