Their story
After the fall of Bataan in April 1942, Gause escaped Japanese capture in the Philippines and, with Capt. William Osborne, sailed a small boat roughly 3,000 miles to Australia in one of the war's greatest escapes. He later joined the 365th Fighter Group in England, where he was killed on March 9, 1944, when his P-47 Thunderbolt crashed during a test flight near Beaulieu.
