About this cemetery

The Normandy American Cemetery sits on a bluff overlooking Omaha Beach and the English Channel, on the site of the temporary American St. Laurent Cemetery established on June 8, 1944 — the first American cemetery on European soil in World War II. It contains the graves of 9,388 of the American military dead, most of whom lost their lives in the D-Day landings and ensuing operations.

Along the walls of the semicircular garden on the east side of the memorial are inscribed the names of 1,557 of the missing. Rosettes mark the names of those since recovered and identified.

Location & directions

The cemetery lies east of the town of Colleville-sur-Mer, Normandy, northwest of Bayeux, and is reached from the N13 via local roads toward the coast.
