Their story
On D-Day, June 6, 1944, First Lieutenant Monteith landed with the initial assault waves on Omaha Beach near Colleville-sur-Mer and repeatedly moved across fire-swept terrain to reorganize his men and lead them off the beach. He guided two tanks through a minefield under intense artillery and machine-gun fire and directed their fire against enemy positions, then organized and led assaults that secured a defensive position; he was killed by enemy fire when his unit was surrounded.
