Their story
During the Battle of Peleliu on September 15, 1944, Corporal Bausell led his squad in an assault on a strongly defended Japanese pillbox; when an enemy hand grenade landed among his men at the pillbox entrance, he threw himself upon it, absorbing the full blast to shield his comrades. Mortally wounded, he was evacuated to the attack transport USS DuPage and died of his wounds three days later, on September 18, 1944, and was buried at sea.
