Their story
Commander John Anderson Moore commanded the submarine USS Grayback on its eighth, ninth, and tenth war patrols in 1943-1944, sinking numerous Japanese ships and helping pioneer American "wolf-pack" submarine tactics, earning the Navy Cross three times. On February 26, 1944, Grayback was sunk by Japanese air attack southeast of Okinawa with the loss of all hands. His body was never recovered, so he is memorialized on the Walls/Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery.
