Their story
On November 3, 1944, near Capoocan, Leyte, Philippines, Sgt. Mower assumed command of his squad after the leader was killed during an assault on strongly defended Japanese positions along a wooded stream. Though severely wounded while leading his men across the stream, he refused aid and, half-submerged under machine-gun and rifle fire, continued to direct his squad in destroying two enemy machine guns and numerous riflemen until he was killed.
