Their story
Capt. Harl Pease Jr. of the 93rd Bombardment Squadron earned the Medal of Honor for volunteering to fly a hastily repaired, combat-unserviceable B-17 on a 6-7 August 1942 mission against the Japanese airfield at Rabaul, maintaining formation and helping destroy several Zeros before bombing the target amid roughly 30 enemy fighters. His aircraft was shot down; he was captured and later executed by Japanese forces on 8 October 1942. His remains were never recovered, and he is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery.
