Their story
Lieutenant Commander Hilan Ebert served as Engineering Officer aboard the heavy cruiser USS Northampton (CA-26) when the ship was torpedoed and sunk during the Battle of Tassafaronga off Guadalcanal on the night of 30 November 1942. He remained at his post in after engineering, persistently carrying out his duties as his station flooded with oil and water to ensure others could escape, and was lost with the ship. For his heroism he was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross.
